ALTORRELIEVE IN STONE WITH PIEDAD

ALTORRELIEVE IN STONE WITH PIEDAD, TOGETHER MARÍA MAGDALENA AND SAN JUAN. (XV CENTURY)

The atrium had its funerary origin and the original function of cemetery was joined by that of serving as a refuge or meeting place for neighbors and parishioners and even a council house when necessary. The atrium allowed an iconographic program to be displayed on the capitals of the columns, which found the ideal place here. Around the church was the cemetery.

In the cemetery of the Romanesque church of San Miguel there was an altarpiece with the iconographic representation of La Piedad:

«A wall of the cemetery of the ancient temple of San Miguel Arcángel kept a new stone building, in which these effigies or saints seemed to be carved, which were brought or placed there with pious worship after having spent a long time, it seemed to him -for having liked - to a pious priest named Antonio Delgado Fuensalida, benefited from the said church, to choose them for his patronage, and to place them with veneration devoutly placing a sepulcher for himself and for his relatives, year 1628 ».
