THE PIETY OF THE MASTER OF THE CARNATIONS

THE PIETY

This temple and oil on panel presided over one of the chapels of the old Church of San Miguel. In it, the figures acquire a more monumental appearance, thanks to a more emphatic and square definition of the forms, an emphasized sense of volume and a shading of contours on faces, hands and anatomies, with a shiny reprofiling that gives them a metallic appearance.

The theme of La Piedad or the Cry over the dead Christ is one of the most frequently addressed by the Master of the Carnations.

In this painting The Virgin, Christ on her lap, turned in an unstable position towards the viewer, for her veneration, Saint John, the Magdalene, the Holy Women, Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus make up a tight figurative group.
