SAN
BERBNARDINO DE SIENA AND SAN JULIÁN
One of the three tables of the
altarpiece, which apparently was in one of the chapels of the church of San
Miguel. La Piedad or Cry of Christ presided.
This table is also attributed to
the Master of the Carnations. They appear in ornate clothing; Perspective
subtleties are added, in the front foot and in the book that shows San Julián.
San Bernardino was generally
represented with three mitres in front of his feet, symbolizing the rejection
of the three bishop positions that were offered to him. In his hand he usually
carries the Crismón IHS, from which rays come out or which is incorporated in a
sun; this is how his dedication to the "holy name of Jesus" is shown.
MARTYRDOM OF SAINT SEBASTIAN
This tempera and oil on panel is by the Master of the Carnations - second third of the 15th century - It comes from one of the chapels of the old church of San Miguel.
The scene of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian responds to his usual narrative criteria, the breadth of the landscape and the preference for smaller and more fragile figures, still observing in these a medieval hierarchical proportion.
